thermostat mushroom : A proposed Thermostat for Thermonuclear War (T4T)

Three USA national and international problems are:

Proposed solutions to the three problems are:

The First Sustainability Amendment migt read:

In or the United States to reach and maintain sustainability, what is needed is what might be called a First Sustainability Amendment (FSA) to the US Constitution or legislation to similar effect. The FSA might read something like:
Section 1. The federal government is authorized to regulate human reproduction in the United States limited to imposing a schedule of moderate financial incentives and fees, and to regulate immigration and naturalization, all limited to the goal of the pursuit of United States sustainability.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect forty years after the date of ratification.
Initial measures to implement this amendment might be coupons or stamps to assist in the purchase of contraceptives and a schedule of modest "birth fees", based on financial means.

If WPS or NTD become unmanageable, then TW might result. Thus, it is vital that both WPS and NTD be properly managed. The required measure to manage WPS and NTD might, at first, seem un-American. The USA can learn a thing or two from China in these the matters. The USA can, with proper leadership, lightly regulate human reproduction within its borders. The USA can, with proper leadership, pay off its NTD. With these two problems under proper management, the TW problem might just take care of itself, for a brighter future for upcoming generations of Americans. Once future generation of leaders start to crumble under the pressure of WPS or NTD, they might panic and go nuclear on the world and cause a full-scale nuclear exchange, with air bursts over population centers and the works. That is the point of the exercise in long-range goals: to avoid TW. To move Toward a Nuclear-Free World . China does a good job of keeping its citizens working. They do not allow backstabbing and arresting each other on silly charges and incarceration citizens and giving them criminal records just becuase some citizens would like to explore how to avoid TW. The citizens of the USA do it to each other and China laughs all the way to the bank as the USA NTD mounts ever higher. What the USA needs is more effective leadership within its tradition of representative Democracy.

This is AWM (b. 1961). AWN does not want to disappear in Nuclear Armageddon.

If the nukes fly, then AWM is all gone and perhaps his progeny also. No gravesite. No biography nor any obituary. No legacy. Just perhaps a nuclear shadow such as that left on the stone steps outside Sumitomo Hiroshima Bank on August 6, 1945. If they were on any other surface than stone, then no trace of them would be left. See just this segment of the highly-rated TV film The Day After . See the young woman in the blue shirt. In the story, she is Marilyn Oakes, the daughter of Dr. Russell Oakes (played by Jason Robards). The actress is Kyle Aletter. She is presented as young, pretty and smart. Watch her vaporize as the nuclear weapon air bursts at maximum throw-weight altitude over her population center . There is a tiny amount of white ash left over from the calcium in her bones, but that is about it. She disappeared under the thermal radiation of the blast. See also effects of nuclear explosions . If you have the time, you might want to watch the discussion by top statesmen after the original November 20, 1983 ABC broadcaast of the TV film.

The USA and Russia have reduced the nuclear warhead count in the past few decades. But that is not enough. We have to remember the lost opporunity of the Reykjavík Summit where Gorbachev on October 11, 1986, proposed the banning of all ballistic missiles for the sake of future generations, but Reagan rejected Gorbachev's proposal because Gorbachev also insisted that work on Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or as it common known as "Star Wars", cease. Reagan wanted to continue research on SDI and so no agreement was reached. Reagan's Secreatry of State George P. Shultz was also present and as Shultz acknowledges in this August 21, 2000 discussion (click on line labeled "Show Transcript") that he told Reagan that he supported Reagan's decision. The relevant lines are:

Peter Robinson: … and you backed him up.
George Shultz: Absolutely.

Lost, an opportunity lost perhaps for a very long time. Shultz writers articles entitled "Toward a Nuclear-Free World" now, but when he had the oppportunity to take a stand for the future, he instead backed the SDI project which is now recognized to have been, in 1986, just a lot of speculaion about, of all things, the militarization of low-Earth orbit space. Now, some religious zealots, including some Chrstians, think that Nuclear Armageddon is simply the natural progression of huamn civilization. They think that it is the Ssecond Coming of their Christ. They quote the Bible, such as 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 :

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Handel even set this passage to beautiful music such as here. The interpretation of Scripture that Nuclear Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ are the same thing is such hogwash. What utterly reprehensible, mindless, complacent drivel so typical of religious people. We shall be changed by taking Political Action and by multi-lateral nuclear disarmament, not by Nuclear Armageddon.
